Sagal Abdi-Wali MP
I came to Camden as a six-year-old child refugee. Our brilliant, diverse, and caring community was there for me and I feel a responsibility to give something back. That’s why I’ve spent 20 years volunteering locally and working hard for the community I love. This community gave my family hope and a home. Now I have the honour of being your voice in Parliament.
I learnt early on that when people come together, we can make things happen. I’ve spent 20 years volunteering and working alongside local people. From setting up a girls’ football team with my friends at school to becoming the MP for Holborn & St Pancras, I have always tried to give something back to the place that gave so much to me. I know this place because it made me. As your MP, I fight for hope, taking on injustice, and championing opportunity for you and your family every single day.
My story is not unique. Our lives might be different, but all of us share the same challenges. Every day across Camden people work hard. Camden is the place where our dreams can become new businesses, community projects, art, music, and culture. We raise families, make new friendships, support each other and try to create a better future for ourselves. We are all Camden and our lives have been shaped by this place. That’s why I love Camden. Our stories are different, but we share this proud identity because we all call this place home.
I’m fighting to make life easier and fairer for all families in Camden. I have never accepted that the way things are now is how they should be forever. I want every child growing up here to have the same opportunities I had. That’s the Camden I stand up for. Against the odds, Camden made my life possible. Together we can make the impossible possible for each other. That’s our Camden story.
My priorities as your MP:
- Taking on Thames Water: we need to take back control of failing essential services like Thames Water. I am relentless in pushing for public ownership, so it is run for people and not profit.
- Offer all rough sleepers a bed by Christmas: I am bringing together Camden council, local charities, and specialist services so we can deliver Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s mission to offer everyone a route off the streets by Christmas.
- Open up local opportunities: more of the wealth created in Camden should stay in Camden. I will bring our colleges, universities, schools, and skills centres together with employers to create ‘the Camden Way where clear routes into high-quality, well-paid local jobs mean that every child and adult can benefit from the world of opportunity around us.
